PORTABLE COMPUTER HISTORY

1975: IBM 5100 was the 1st portable computer, weighing 55 pounds. Paved the way for the development of laptops.

1976: Alan Kay with the Idea of Xerox PARC, called it DYNA BOOK. Developed a prototype and named it XEROX NOTE TAKER.

1979: Bill Moggridge developed the most portable computer known as GRID Compass which was later used by NASA in their Space shuttle program in the early 1980s.

1981: The OSBORNE 1 was the truly 1st portable computer developed by Adam Osborne. It weighed 24.5 pounds and had a 5" screen. EPSON HX-20 was released as the 1st portable laptop with a built-in printer.

1983: TRS-80MODEL 100 was released in the USA by Radio Shack and it featured an LCD, was manufactured by Kyocera, and sold in Japan.

1984: COMMODORE SX-64 was released by Commodore and was the 1st to have Full-Color Display Screen, weighing 20 Pounds.

1986: PC CONVERTIBLE, released by IBM, weighing 12 pounds and making it the 1st laptop under 15 pounds.

1987: VECTRA PORTABLE CS was released by Hewlett-Packard, it featured a 3.5 Floppy Disk Drive capable of using 1.44MB Diskettes.

1988: MACINTOSH PORTABLE was the 1st release of APPLE. NEC ULTRALITE was released by NEC as the 1st NoteBook laptop, weighing less than 5 pounds.

1991: POWER BOOK was released by Apple after a flop of their MACINTOSH PORTABLE.

1992: THINKPAD Laptop models, the 300, 700, and 700C were released by IBM. Microsoft and Intel teamed up to release APM (Advanced Power Management).

Olivetti released the 1st ever laptop with a TOUCH-PAD.

1993: COMPAQ CONCERTO as the 1st 2-in-1 laptop, with a detachable wired keyboard and stylus.

1994: THINKPAD 775CD, with an integrated CD-ROM Drive, was released by IBM.

1996: GATEWAY SOLO 2100 was the 1st to feature with Intel Pentium Processor.
RS/6000 860 laptops which had a built-in WEBCAM.

1997: PORTEGE 300CT released by TOSHIBA.

2002: TOSHIBA PORTEGE 2000 became the thinnest laptop, and also had a 1.8" Hard Drive in a laptop.

2003: POWER BOOK G4 was the 1st laptop to have a 17" Screen, 802.11g Wi-Fi, and a backlit Keyboard released by APPLE.

TOSHIBA PORTEGE M100 featured a slim DVD-ROM Drive.

2006: Official use of INTEL PROCESSORS in Apple Laptops, released MACBOOK PRO with a 15" Screen.

2007: Eee PC 701 by ASUS was the 1st NetBook with a screen of 7", an Intel Celeron-M Processor, and a 4GB SDHC Storage Disk.

2008: MACBOOK AIR release was the thinnest laptop by APPLE.

TOUCH SMART TX2, a 2-in-1 laptop with multi-touch, uses a stylus and was released by HP.

2011: Acer and Samsung teamed up to release CHROMEBOOK.

2023: The 1st ever manufacturer of OLED screens for laptops, 13" and 16" screens with Touch-Screen, 3K Resolution, and up to 120Hz Refresh Rate.
